The Use And Application Of Zinc Oxide
- May 10, 2018 -

White powder consisting of amorphous or acicular small particles, molecular formula ZnO, molecular weight 81.38, density 5.606 g/cm3. It is yellow at high temperatures and returns to white after cooling, melting point 1975°C. The coloring power is twice that of white lead, and the hiding power is half that of titanium dioxide and zinc sulfide. Non-toxic, odorless, no sand. Zinc Oxide is an amphoteric oxide and is easily soluble in acids, alkalis, ammonium chloride and ammonia. It is insoluble in water and alcohol. Wet-processed lead-zinc ore-processed active zinc oxide is white or slightly yellowish spherical fine powder with a very fine particle size of 0.02 μm. The specific surface area is 45 m2/g (easy to disperse in rubber or latex) and is a heat-resistant agent. Zinc oxide sterilizes and sterilizes, has light guiding properties and semiconductor properties, and absorbs ultraviolet light. It also converts sunlight into chemical energy like chlorophyll.

Zinc oxide is extremely versatile and is used mainly in rubber, plastics, paints, petrochemicals, glass, ceramics, paints, batteries, cements, pharmaceuticals, and feedstuffs. It is also used in camera and electrostatic rejuvenation of spacecraft paints, manufacturing of fireworks and smoke bombs, Ammonium nitrate explosives and even cigarette filters.

The rubber industry is the largest zinc oxide market both at home and abroad. It is used in a large number of tire production. Its market share in China accounts for about 50%, it accounts for about 60% of the total market in the US, and about 40% in Western Europe. In Japan, it accounts for about 48%, and there is a tendency to continue to grow.

The second largest market for zinc oxide is different at home and abroad. In China, the paint industry has a market share of about 25%; in the United States, it is the chemical industry with a market share of about 21%; Western Europe is a ceramic and glass industry, which accounts for 15% of the total market; Japan is a production of zinc ferrite, Market share is about 11%.

(1) Rubber industry: In the rubber vulcanization process of lead-zinc mine equipment, zinc oxide can improve the physical properties of vulcanized rubber, enhance the activity of the accelerator, shorten the vulcanization time, and improve the rubber wear resistance and tensile mechanical properties. Secondly, it is used as a reinforcing agent and colorant for rubber, and it can also be used as a vulcanizing agent for chloroprene rubber and a compounding agent for increasing the thermal conductivity.

(2) Paint and coating industry: It mainly applies its coloring power, hiding power, and anti-corrosion and luminescence. Used to produce white paint and enamel. Zinc oxide is slightly alkaline, and it can react with trace free fatty acids to form zinc soap, making the film flexible, strong, and preventing metal oxidation.

(3) In the printing and dyeing industry, zinc oxide is used as a resist; in the chemical industry, zinc oxide is used as a catalyst. In addition, it is also used as a raw material for the production of opalescent glass and zinc white varieties of oil paints and watercolor pigments, as well as cosmetics and various zinc salts.
